Between 1898 and 1902 whole trains were barged across the Columbia between Robson and Robson West to connect with the Columbia & Western Railway which the CPR had bought from Augustus Heinze. With the completion of the Crowsnest line in 1898, Crowsnest coal was being shipped to the smelter which CPR also reluctantly purchased from Heinze. During the same period the smelter was being electrified by power from West Kootenay Power & Light Co. In 1902 the train bridge across the Columbia was completed.
